While Andrew was stationed in Paris, he noticed that every restaurant seemed to have ‘Salmon from the Loire.’
How, he wondered, could a small river produce enough salmon to supply so many restaurants?
When Andrew had occasion to call on the Minister of Fisheries, he asked, ‘Is it true that there are salmon in the Loire?’
‘Yes,’ the minister replied.
‘And do you know how many salmon were caught last year?’
‘I do,’ came the reply. ‘Twenty–one.’
Subsequently Andrew learned that a man in Brittany imported tons of fish from Norway, and he stamped on every box, ‘Salmon from the Loire.’
Andrew was able to assist in negotiating a contract for salmon from British Columbia to be shipped to France. No doubt, every Canadian box was stamped ‘Salmon from the Loire.’
